We start here.
Audience + Purpose + Genre = Style (how it looks) and Content (what it says)
Now we look at directions. What have the writers assumed about their audiences?
In your daybook, describe the two examples you brought to class. Describe the directions and their puropose. How effective do you think they are? Explain why.
In groups you will look at the style and the content of the examples you brought to class. Create a list you can share with the class of the characteristics of effective vs. ineffective directions.
Homework:
1. Fill at least one page (one side) in your daybook describing a situation where you were frustrated by ineffective directions. As you describe what happened, try to analyze what the specific problems were with those directions based on today's discussions.

Welcome!
For tomorrow you need your books (The Bedford Guide for College Writers, and The Everyday Writer) and a spiral notebook or composition book for a daybook.
Today we will go over the syllabus for the course, we will discuss a definition for writing, and you will write about this prompt:
Describe your worst writing experience and your greatest writing success.
