Read the interview.  We discuss it.

Notice the kind of observation/description going on in this interview.

I return your short essays on audience awareness. In your daybook, list two strengths and two weaknesses of this essay.

Freewrite:  Consider the usefulness (utility) of close observation, in your life, job, and/or the lives or jobs of others. Do you know someone who always sees so much more than you do in a certain situation? Describe the person and why that is. What do YOU mean by "close observation"?  Think about that, and explain.

This is the prompt you will write to tomorrow:  In a short essay of five or so paragraphs, discuss what close observation involves, and explain its usefulness.  Be sure to include detailed examples, an introduction and conclusion.

Homework:

1.  If you have not done your interview, you need to get it done before Wednesday.

You have one more shot to proofread your papers.  Then you turn everything in.

Then groups discuss questions 4,5 and 6 on page 104 in Bedford.  One person writes your answers down to hand in.

Now as a group brainstorm twenty questions that might be useful in an interview.  Everyone lists these in their daybooks.

In your daybook list the name and phone number of the person you will interview within the next 5 days.  Call them today!

Homework:

1.  Develop a list of 8-10 questions you will use with your subject.  Write these in your daybook. 

2. Schedule the interview.  Do it. 

3. Take notes IN YOUR DAYBOOK about the interview, even if you record it electronically.

We look at interviewing and read an example paper. Read the example on pages 102-104 in Bedford.  Answer questions 1 and 2 on page 104 in your daybook.

Then we look at Sec. 37 in Everyday Writer and you do some of Ex. 37.1 in your daybook.

Homework:

1.  Your Final Version of the Observation  is due tomorrow.  Bring ALL drafts and all blue sheets that go with them.

2.  Tomorrow you must be able to give me the name and phone number of the person you plan to interview for the next paper. Make a decision and find out TODAY what the phone number is.
