Persuasion

Thinkwrite: People change. Or not. Can you think of a situation where you were persuaded to change, or you persuaded someone else to change, either thoughts or actions?

I. Persuasion is difficult to do. Aristotle and the ancients came up with Logos, Ethos and Pathos.

We watch this.

Logos: facts, statistics

Ethos: experts, your testimony (be trustworthy)

Pathos: emotional presentation (strong story?)

As you assemble this paper consider how you are persuading the reader that this a serious problem, and that we should be part of the solution (if possible).

II. Read some more examples of this kind of writing. Please go to the site, The Art of Manliness, and look for an article that interests you. You must choose one that addresses a problem and provides solutions (many of the articles there do this). Do NOT choose a video. Read the article, and answer the following questions in your daybook:

1. What is the problem?

2. What are the causes of the problem?

3. What solutions are mentioned?

4. Do you detect any appeals to your emotions or reason in this article? Explain.

5. Do you think these solutions will work? Why do you think this?

Homework:

1. Get Draft 2 ready for tomorrow. You will be uploading it in Moodle, as well as reading each other's drafts. Final Version due Friday.
