Timed In-class Essay Assignment

I am sick again today. Tuesday is the day you will write the timed Common Assessment Final.

The assignment sheet is sitting on my desk in my office 156A. Please stop by and pick one up. You will be reading a short article and thinking about it, in order to write about it during class on Tuesday.

Read, annotate and prepare to write about this article on Tuesday. On Tuesday you will find out what the prompts are; there will be a choice between two different ways to write about the article.

MLA Details

I am sick today. You do not have to attend class, but you are responsible for the following work in Moodle and your day book.

To practice how in-text citations work with a bibliography, you'll read an example paper in Moodle.

1. Go to the highlighted section of our class in Moodle.

2. Click on "Till Death Do Us Part" example paper. Download the paper.

3. Read the whole thing.

4. Highlight ALL the in-text citations in the paper with yellow. (You do not have to save this paper; highlighting will help you answer the questions.)

Then answer the questions below IN YOUR DAYBOOK:

1. How many quotes  of any source do you find in this paper?

2. How many times was a source paraphrased?

3.  Copy down a parenthetical citation (everything inside the parentheses) that uses an author’s last name.

4.  Copy down a parenthetical citation that uses the title of an article.

5.  Look at the Works Cited list on page 5.  How many of these sources are from the internet? 

How many are print?

6. Give a shortened version of the title of the oldest source she used.

 7.  Do you think Mother Jones is a book or a magazine? 

                     How can you tell by looking at the Works Cited citation?

8.  When I look at the Works Cited page, I can tell when this student was working on researching her paper.  Look carefully.  What is the date range when she was looking up information?

 9.  This quote is cited in the paper like this:
