Beginnings and Summary/Response

I return your papers. You write in your daybook:  1. Copy the strengths and weaknesses down. 2.  One comment/mark that surprised you.  3.  One comment/mark that you already knew.

THEN you make a list of the numbered errors.  Give the number, look up in the Everyday Writer Top Twenty what that problem is, and copy down what you had and what the fix is.  If it is a style issue, explain your preference.

Then we look at alternative beginnings and discuss endings.

Assignment:  Find a song that has both a logical ending in the words AND the music. See Styx.  See Coldplay.

Homework:

1.  Be working on your final draft of the Remembering paper, due Tuesday.  If you want my input, you can attach a draft to an email.

2.  Be finding a song with a concrete ending that you can show us in class on Monday.

More About Remembering

First of all, you do Ex. 24.2 on pages 259-260 in your daybook.

You review Alice Walker, and in your daybook explain what the main idea of this essay is. What is her point?

Then you get into groups.  How many scenes or episodes does  Walker recount?  List them according to her age at the time.  Explain how each episode relates to her main idea.

Homework:

1.  Prepare Draft #2 of Remembering.

2.  Finish Ex. 24.2.

3.  One vocabulary word.

4.  Friday I will collect your daybooks for the first of three checks.

Homework:

1.  Keep thinking and working on your draft.  Draft #2 is due Thursday.

2.  Read Alice Walker's "Beauty."

3.  One vocabulary word.

More Remembering

You read "Arm Wrestling with My Father."

Answer some of the questions in your daybook. Do "Meaning" #1 and "Writing Strategy" #1.

Then in groups analyze the use of the techniques for writing about memories.

Homework:

Draft #1 is due tomorrow.  It can be as rough as a free write, but try to have more than two pages.
