You have a daybook assignment in our class in Moodle.  Go there, click on the assignment in the Summary/Response section. Look for this image:

After you do that, type up your Draft #1 of the Summary/Response. Bring 2 copies to class on Monday.

Working on your Paper/ IP Due

Before we start: on the board, quote a short phrase or sentence from your article that stood out to you. It might seem unique to the author, or representative of the point of the article.

Grammar:

Review of coordination and subordination. See your daybook.

I. The following is a run-on. Fix it by combining the two clauses four different ways using subordination (p. 290) and coordination (fanboys or a semicolon):

Education is an elusive word it often means different things to different people.
Done correctly, you will have 4 long sentences that say the same thing but are held together differently.
.

II.  I hand out the Writer's Page early, so we can look over the grading rubric to see what should be in your draft.

III. Work on the draft due Monday. During class Monday you will read and write about each other's drafts.

IV. Make sure you post a blurb about your IP essay (in Moodle).

Homework:

1. Finish up your draft. Type it and bring two copies to class Monday.

2. Tomorrow, Friday, class will NOT meet. There IS a daybook activity to do in Moodle. You click on the link, watch a Prezi, and then write in your daybook.

3. TWFTD: elude in OED. Elusive comes from "elude."

Understanding Your Article

Hand in your Short Intellectual Property essay today or tomorrow.

On the board, commit to an article.

Now answer the questions on this handout about your chosen article.

Which questions would have objective answers? Which subjective?

You can see which would lead to summary and which to response. You may work together if you wish.

Practicing Summary/ Reponse

Thinkwrite: What did you think about the Pat Bourne article?

We discuss the questions you answered.

You write.

Now read an example of Summary/Analysis about the Pat Bourne reading.
  • Underline the sentence that states the main point of the article.
  • Label the paragraphs in the margins -- intro/summary/analysis/concl
  • Underline author tags.
  • Put a wavy line under all the negative statements by me you can see.

You were to have read both articles and chosen one. You have time to read and take objective/ subjective notes about the article.  Do this in your daybook (fold a page in half and write in two columns).

Homework:

1. Read your chosen article and fill one page in your daybook with objective/ subjective notes about the article.

2. Short Intellectual Property Essay DUE TOMORROW.

3. TWFTD: a word from your article, with quote from article.

Long Essay #2: Summary/ Response

Reminder about working on your Short Intellectual Property essay. We look at Bedford pages 428-432.

Blurbs: For homework, you wrote a summary of one of the Intellectual Property links  on the blog Friday. Now go to our class in Moodle, and post a one or two sentence blurb about that source in the forum there.

What is Summary/Response? You just wrote a microsummary that may have had opinion in it too. If it did, it was doing response as well. That's objective and subjectiving writing about something.

Handout of next Long Paper Assignment.

See readings in Bedford.

How is this done? To practice, read this handout about Pat Bourne. Answer the questions in your daybook.

Homework:

1. Finish Pat Bourne questions in your daybook.

2. Be working on your IP essay.

3. Start looking at the readings for the Summary/ Response Essay.

2. TWFTD: blurb in OED
