Summary/ Anlaysis Draft 1 Due

Today you read 2 drafts and comment on them.

And here is something that relates to your paper.

Homework:

1.  Make revisions to your draft. Look at comments.  Study the grading rubric on the back of the Writer's Page.  Are you doing what is described there? Draft 2 is due Tuesday, and will also  be uploaded to TurnItIn within Moodle.

Charting and Drafting

Grammar:

Review of coordination and subordination. See 1/24 in your daybook.

I.  Combine the following sentences (clauses) four different ways using subordination (p. 239) and coordination (fanboys or a semicolon):

Education is an elusive word.

It often means different things to different people.

Done correctly, you will have 4 long sentences that say the same thing but are held together differently.

II.  Together we create a chart (outline?) of the siblings article.

Now in your daybook, create a graphical representation of your article (or a rough outline).  Put paragraph numbers in it (if you are doing Rockwell's, you must number the paragraphs first).

III.  Look at pages 42-43 to help you evaluate the evidence.

IV.  We review the assignment sheet to see what should be in your draft.

Any time left is for working on the draft due tomorrow.  During class tomorrow you will read and write about each other's drafts.

Homework:

1.  Finish up your draft.

2. TWFTD:  a word from your article, again. Quote the article.

Working on Your Article

We look at consumerism in the OED.

You have annotated?

Analyze the argument.  Who's making an argument?  What kind of evidence is being provided? Does it in fact support the point? Question EVERYTHING.

Groups:  What is the point of the article?  Write it across the top of your copy of the article. What evidence is used? Compare and add to your annotations.

Now answer the questions on this handout about your chosen article.  Which questions would have objective answers?  Which subjective? You can see which would lead to summary and which to analysis.  You may work together if you wish.

Being Poor Is....

Homework:

1.  Finish the handout, and begin writing your first draft, due Friday.  For Friday, you should have BOTH some summary and some analysis in your draft. If you quote from the article, keep it to only part of a sentence.

2.  TWFTD:  a word from your article, quote the article.

How to Summarize

Thinkwrite:
A. What was your reaction to Pat Bourne's life?
B. What was your reaction to the article?

We discuss the questions.

You write.

Now read an example of Summary/Analysis about the  Pat Bourne reading.
  • Underline the sentence that states the main point of the article.
  • Label the paragraphs in the margins -- intro/summary/analysis/concl
  • Underline author tags.
  • Put a wavy line under all the negative statements by me you can see.

You were to have read both articles.  Now pick up a copy of the article you will write about so that you can annotate it. You may refer to both articles in your paper, but you only have to annotate one.

Homework:

1. Read your chosen article and annotate it.  It will be part of the next daybook check. It MUST be annotated FOR TOMORROW.

2. TWFTD: a word from your article, with quote from article.

Summary/Analysis

From your daybooks:
  • "tough" is a little word with lots of meanings.  Many of you -- most of you -- used a quote that did NOT match the definition you copied.  (Especially about life being tough.) Look ....
  • keep the siblings handout for use later this week.
Write a short summary of the Consumerism film.
"According to 'Big Ideas That Changed the World- Consumerism,' ....."

Write a short summary of the Money film.

"According to 'Can Money Make You Happy,'....."

What is Summary/Analysis?
Handout of next Long Paper Assignment.
See readings in Bedford.

How is this done? To practice, read this handout about Pat Bourne. Answer the questions in your daybook.

Homework:

1.  Finish Pat Bourne questions in your daybook.

2.  Read BOTH consumerism articles and determine which one you DISAGREE with the most.  That is the one you will write about.

3.  TWFTD: consumerism as it was used in "Big Ideas..."

Hey, Energy Generation, have you seen this?
