Getting Your Paper in Shape

Let's talk more about the Three Appeals. Worksheet.

Thinkwrite: Consider the advertising you've seen lately. Where are the ads that you actually notice? What is one ad that you remember? Is it using an appeal based on ethos, logos, or pathos? Describe it.

And then there's the problem of HOW you present your facts. If your want to be persuasive for this class, please be sure  to present the facts in as fair a manner as possible. And be sure to deal with the facts that do NOT support your view. [ Can you spot the issues with the graphs in this link? ]

3PM class: do the Drowning punctuation exercise in Moodle.

Open your paper in the TurnItIn document reader and look at matches and grammar mark-up.

Next Tuesday, when you hand this paper in, you will also turn it in electronically into TurnItIn.

You hand in your daybooks today.

Homework:

1. Get your Problem/ Solution paper into final shape to turn in on Tuesday.

Upload the efile of your paper to Moodle (Turnitin) in the Problem/ Solution section of our class.

1. Prepare your drafts to exchange.

2. Let's revisit the rubric to see what will earn a good grade in this assignment. Help each other meet the assignment.

Homework:

1. The final version of this paper is due on Tuesday March 3.

2. Pay special attention to the evidence you are using, and how you present it. If the information comes from a source, cite it the best way you know how. The CRAAP Test

You will be using online sources both to explain your problem and defend your solution/s.

The most important part of that process is taking the time to choose carefully the sources you use.

Use The CRAAP Test when you do so. The CRAAP Test Prezi.

1. Take notes in your daybook.

2. Get a copy of the CRAAP Test Worksheet.

3. Use that sheet to score TWO different sources that you have visited online about your topic. Write on the one sheet for both sites (label two columns?) and come up with a final score for each.

If you have done NO web investigating on your topic, start googling.

Homework:

1. Finish the above activity using the CRAAP Test. This will be due Friday with the daybook check.

2. Draft 2 of your Problem/ Solution paper is due tomorrow, typed, in essay format.

3. At some point tomorrow you will also turn in the e-file of the paper in Turnitin through Moodle. You will be able to see how you're doing with paraphrasing/quoting source information.

4.  TWFTD: relevance in OED see def. #3.

Today you read drafts and give feedback.

Using Evidence

Thinkwrite: Your brother is shopping for a car. He has found two cars on Craigslist that he likes. You think one of them is a horrible choice. What kind of evidence will you present to him to prevent a BIG MISTAKE on his part?

Read pages 40-42 in Bedford. Let's sort them.

How about evidence for your problem/ solution? As you draft this paper, include links to ANY sources you use.

Now we look at another example of this kind of writing: Bedford pages 187-189.

Homework:

1. Draft #1 Problem/ Solution is due tomorrow. Look for evidence online to help you make your points. Just put hyperlinks to your sources in the draft as you write.

2. TWFTD: rehabilitation
