Summary/Response Due

Turn in your Summary/Response papers.

Comma check of Ex. 38.1.  Do Ex. 38.4 on page 96-97.

We go to the library.  In your daybook you must list title, author and source information for two sources that are on one of the topics you listed yesterday.

When you have done that, sit and read related sources.

At the end of class, turn in your daybooks.

Homework:

1.  Decide on your topic for the Informative essay and begin writing.  The first draft is due Wednesday.

A Story From Your Experience

A bit of grammar: We look over Section 38 in The Everyday Writer.

You do Ex. 38.1 page 93-94 in Ev. Wr. Exercise Book.

In your daybook, number from 1-10 and write the word with the needed comma following it.

Now, the next paper.  We look at the assignment sheet.  What are reputable sources?

Now for today's daybook assignment:

On a full page, space out the letters A through E in outline style.  Under each letter leave room to number 1-3.  Next to each letter you will write a topic that you can tell a story or two about.  Then come up with three questions related to those stories that would take you to serious sources to answer.

For instance, from my list:

A. Sailing

     1.  Why did our aluminum mast snap?  Is this common? What is metal fatigue?

     2. Can you lightning-proof a sailboat?

     3.  How many people die each year from sailing accidents? How many sailboats are out there compared to motor boats?

B.  Hiking with little kids (losing Peter)

     1. How many hikers are lost each year in CO or USA?

     2. Where do they charge you for search and rescue?

     3. How have gas prices affected RV sales?  manufacture?

C.  Goats

      1.  Why is colostrum so necessary?

      2. How has the formula changed for powdered kid's milk over the years?

      3. What is the growth difference between kids on milk and kids on powder?

Homework:

1.  Finish this list.  You must fill out letters A through E with at least three questions each. Each question that is solid gets 10 points.  I will give points for more than three questions.

2.  Summary/Response Final Version turned in tomorrow.

2.  TWFTD: citation from the  OED

Summary/Response Draft #2

We watch this.  How have you seen this done, or done it yourself?

I return your long observation papers.  In your daybook:
1.  Copy down what I wrote for your strengths and weaknesses.
2.  List one comment or score that surprised you.
3.  Make a list of the marked punc./grammar errors and tally a count.  What are your top three errors?

Prepare your drafts, and you read them in the same groups.

Before tomorrow, upload your draft through Moodle to the TurnItIn document reader.

Homework:

1.  Be ready to edit tomorrow. You will work on the "top three" from today. Have your draft uploaded in our class's Moodle site.

2.  TWsFTD: "intellectual property" -- define and find and quote a sentence that uses the term.

Do Summary/Response. Avoid Plagiarism.

In your daybook,  define plagiarism.  Here's one.

First of all, plagiarism stories: Viswanathan  Why did the publisher cancel her contract and destroy her books?  Helene Why did the publisher NOT cancel her contract, etc.?   Herr Guttenberg. Was this the right outcome for Germany?

On to bigger questions of ownership:    Book covers?  Was this a case of theft? A business model? How could this be stopped? If the courts are in charge...  Do you agree with this ruling?

Better news, for some:  music...  TV   iTunes

All the questions above are answered in the daybook.

Homework:

1.  Draft #2 Sum/Response due tomorrow, and also submit your draft within Moodle to TurnItIn.

2. TWFTD: nebulous.
