Work Day

1. Read "Lazy Eyes" by Michael Agger on pages 609 to 612 in The Bedford Guide.

Be ready to answer questions over the reading on Monday.

2. Open your paper in Moodle in Turnitin to look at grammar corrections (still done by software).

To open your paper up in Turnitin, go to our class in Moodle. Click on the "Draft #2 upload to Turnitin" link, then click on the "My Submissions" tab. That should open and show you the title of your paper with a little pencil logo. Click on either the title or the pencil, and then wait for the "viewer" to load.

Your paper should open in the viewer. At the top left is a button to click for the grammar feedback. If you see NO purple marks on your paper ( they take time to load) it is either not working, or your paper is perfect. It does mark stuff that is correct -- it's asking you to double-check. It's only a machine. Mouse over stuff -- it gives explanations.

3. Create the Final Version of your Kickstarter on Paper, due Tuesday Feb. 4, one hard copy.

             I should have your daybooks.

Draft #2 Feedback Day

Being persuasive:  Thinkwrite about a time that someone persuaded you to do something or to think something different from your normal ways. Or perhaps you persuaded someone else. How did that happen? What does it take to "change a mind"?

We upload papers into Turnitin in Moodle for the grammar help.

Remember to use EasyBib to cite your pictures/illustrations if you use the two allowed.

Now you read and comment on two drafts.

Turn in your daybook at the end of class.

Homework:

1. I have a meeting tomorrow, so there will be another work day. Class will NOT meet Friday Jan 31. Use the Turnitin viewer to help you edit and proofread. The Final Version of your paper is due Tuesday Feb. 4. On Monday bring any editing/proofreading questions you have.

2. Read in The Bedford Guide pages 609-612. It's an article called "Lazy Eyes" by Michael Agger.

2. TWFTD: blog in  OED.

3. No typo.

Being Persuasive

I return the Lego papers. In your daybook, please answer these questions:

1. In which category did you lose the most points?
2. What was your strongest category? Pick one if there's a tie.
3. Hopefully, you made enough "mistakes" to learn something. What did you learn from doing the Lego project?

First of all, an innovator in crowdsourcing:

James Murray                               from The Guardian: photo PA
We watch this video....then look at the OED. Punk, anyone?  From now on, I may tell you that your TWFTD info must come from the OED. When I do that, you first choose ONE of the quotes, copy it down, give its year, and then the definition that matches that quote. Please do scan down ALL the definitions when I send you to the OED. See the link on the left side of this post for the OED. If you are at home, the password info is there as well.

Now, how are you trying to be persuasive in your Kickstarter?

Here's advice from one business writer: http://www.writingwithclarity.com/2011/11/want-to-be-persuasive-try-being-more-friendly-and-cooperative/  Read this and write a paragraph summary in your daybook.

Homework:

1. Draft #2 is due tomorrow. Headings and title may be font size 14. Otherwise, everything else is 12. Try to have your draft very close to the final product. The Final Version (hard copy) is due Tuesday Feb. 4. Tomorrow you will need to be able to upload the e-file of your draft in Turnitin through Moodle, as well as having a hard copy for class.

2. TWFTD: credible in OED.

3. Daybooks due tomorrow.

4. No typo.

5. More about the OED:  To compile a dictionary of nearly every word in the English language was an endeavor typical of Victorian times, complete with white-bearded gentlemen, utter confidence and an endearingly plodding pace. After a quarter-century, the first installment emerged in 1884. Its contents? “A to Ant.” (Rachman)

Draft #1 Kickstarter on Paper Due

One hard copy needed of your Draft #1 Kickstarter on Paper. As you give feedback, try to use a different color of ink for comments ON a draft.

What kinds of things does a FIRST DRAFT need feedback on? NOT proofreading...

We get started.

Homework:

1. Read the comments and feedback that you got. If there isn't much there, do you want to email a copy to me for feedback? kloden@southeast.edu

2. Work on Draft #2 due Thursday.

3. TWFTD: punk

4. No typo.

Kickstarter Reviews Due

Turn in your Kickstarter Reviews.

I assume you are working on your Kickstarter on Paper project. Questions?

Why is English so hard to spell?

I hand out a sheet. Read it over and complete anything on it you can.

Here is the link to today's lecture on "Why Is English So Hard to Spell? This is called a Prezi, a new alternative to powerpoints. Fill your handout in as we go. After class I'm hoping you'll open this up and look at the stuff I skipped over.

Keep the handout in your daybook for the next check.

The Lego project is graded and visible in Moodle. I'll return them Wednesday.

Homework:

1. Draft #1 of the Kickstarter on Paper is due tomorrow. Your classmates will read and give feedback. Remember, you may play with formatting, but you need the 4 Key Elements:

1. Explain the product.
2. Explain the plan of production.
3. Have incentives/rewards for investment.
4. Risks and Challenges. (What might prevent success with production?)

2. TWFTD: assimilation

3. If the history of English interests you, watch this video, a "lighthearted" (not safe for school) history of English in 10 minutes.

Wikipedia in "English Language": "Owing to the assimilation of words from many other languages throughout history, modern English contains a very large vocabulary, with complex and irregular spelling, particularly of vowels."

4. No typo.
