Writing Solo Paper #2

You now have today's class to type up your short essay about "Black Men and Public Space." Use the yellow assignment sheet to guide you; read the grading rubric on the back.

This timed practice prepares you for the departmental assessment essay that will happen near the end of the quarter.

At the end of class you will post your draft in the forum in Moodle that is in the highlighted section.

You may revise/finish this draft; it will be handed in on Monday, and I will grade the hard copy you hand in then.

Homework:

1. Finish typing this essay to hand in Monday. Bring the yellow assignment sheet as well.

2. Do the "Comma Rule Practice" handout for Monday.

2. TWFTD: your choice from "Black Men and Public Space."

C.S. and Frag. and R.O.

What are c.s. r.o. and frag.? How many were marked in the margins of your Solo #1 paper?

Which of the following are sentences (independent clauses)?

Loving cats in my house.

All the cats in my house scratching the furniture.

On the furniture, in the kitchen, under the bed.

For example, the calico and the mangy gray cats.

How do we correctly and clearly combine ideas? Usually, a conjunction is involved. Handout.

See this:

Here are some short sentences:

My dog loves to chase cats.

Our barn is full of cats.

Most of the cats on my place ignore the dog.

No cat has ever been injured by my dog.

Please create two long sentences. In one of them, use coordination to combine two of these sentences. In the other, use subordination to combine two of these sentences.

Now, we discuss the summary/response assignment.

Homework:

1. Continue to read and understand "Black Men and Public Space." Make sure you understand all the vocabulary in it. Complete your page of notes.

2. Tomorrow you will have 45 minutes to type on your Solo Paper #2. You are using this time to practice for the timed in-class assessment essay that will occur near the end of the quarter.

3. TWFTD: your choice from "Black Men and Public Space."

4. Additional help with cs/ro/frag issues:   If you have few errors, but want to think more about HOW you put ideas together, read pages 287-294.  If you have many errors, read pages 385-396. (All reading in The Everyday Writer.)

A Summary/ Response Essay

You do some writing.

We discuss the Pat Bourne questions.

Now you read an example essay that is doing summary/ response (download from Moodle, do "Save As"  and add YOUR LAST NAME to the file name).

Then colorize YOUR copy of the essay, using these directions:

1. Make the first and last sentences in the paper red. The first should be a hook. The last is a “clincher.”

2. Italicize the title and author of the article I'm writing about.

3. Make the thesis orange.

4. Make the summary yellow.

5. Make any response to the content of the article pale blue.

6. Underline any quotes. These are places that used the exact words of the article.

7. Make BOLD any time I used “the writer”  or "the author" or "the article"– these are called author tags (and would have used a name if there was one on this article).

When you are done, go to moodle to upload your colorized version in the forum there. Be sure to follow the instructions so that you answer the required questions as you post.'s

What's subjective vs. objective?

Homework:

1. Make sure all the above is complete.

2. Begin reading "Black Men in Public Space" by Brent Staples p. 520-522 in Bedford. You'll want to have read it several times in order to write about it. Here's a link as well: http://www.phil.washington.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/Black%20Men%20in%20Public%20Space%20Article.pdf

3. As you read, take a page of notes that has TWO COLUMNS:  Summary ////  Response

Kickstarters on Paper Due

First of all, trade lilac comment sheets with each other. You should end up with the four comment sheets that YOU filled out about other papers, to hand in with your own paper. Assemble your drafts and comment sheets as instructed on the board.

I discuss the genres you have written so far.

I return your Solo Paper #1.

In your daybook:

Paragraph #1: What are the strengths of your paper? Please quote at least ONE comment written by Kate on your paper or rubric.

Paragraph #2: What is one or more weakness of your paper? Please quote at least ONE comment written by Kate on the paper or rubric.

Now for some group work. See board.

Next genre: an essay about a reading.

Homework:

1. Read the handout and answer the questions at the end in your daybook. Have this done before class tomorrow.

2. TWFTD: essay in the OED (read all the way down!)

The OED and Citing

Thinkwrite:   Now that you've spent a lot of time on Kickstarter, what do you think about crowdsourcing?

Examples? mPINGfrom Scientific American.  We watch this video....then look at the OED. Punk, anyone?

From now on, I may tell you that your TWFTD info must come from the OED. When I do that, you first choose ONE of the quotes, copy it down, give its year, and then the definition that matches that quote. Please do look over ALL the definitions when I send you to the OED. See the link on the left side of this post for the OED. If you are at home, the password info is there as well.

One more time, we look at the rubric for  the paper due tomorrow.

Now, how will you cite your pictures? We go to page 468 in The Everyday Writer and Easy Bib.

Homework:

1. Get your citations in shape for the Kickstarter on Paper, due tomorrow. If you have included pictures, you need a Works Cited page.

2. Pay attention to the ending of your Kickstarter on Paper. It's worth points -- do you have a final pitch of some kind?

3. Bring ALL DRAFTS AND COMMENT SHEETS with you tomorrow to turn in with your final version.

3. TWFTD: punk in the OED.
