Draft #2 Due and Daybook Check

Take out your hard copy of your draft and Bedford.

NOW we are going to go FULL MLA ON YOUR PAPER!!!!! Every single person should get 10/10 on the MLA score for this paper. That includes a correct Works Cited page, the format of the paper, and citing the source as you write.

Underline every QUOTE in your paper.  Now, after that quote, add in (pencil in now, type in later) the page number from the book where that quote appears in the text, like this:

When Zinsser says he wants to "put in a word for the fink," I am confused (624).

Schor gives us a few options for thinking about the collection of "malcontents" that she describes. She guesses that we might think they are "funny, pathetic, or reprehensible" (635).

Note that the period is outside the (  ).

Are you quoting someone else who was quoted by your author? This is tricky; be careful and ask for help if you are not sure.

If you have NO quotes in your paper, you have nothing to do.

Now you get in the same groups as Wednesday, and read and comment upon two drafts.

Submit this draft into Turnitin in Moodle.

Hand in daybooks at the end of class.

Homework:

The final version of this paper is due Tuesday Feb. 18.

Critical Thinking

Topic: Critical Thinking   Thinkwrite: In one sentence explain what critical thinking is, and then describe a situation or activity you've gone through that required you to do critical thinking.

We discuss.

You read pages 40-43 in Bedford.

Based on your reading of your article and the notes you have taken, answer the following questions in your daybook:

1.  What is the main point your author is trying to make?

2. Copy down in quotation marks one sentence from the article which states this point (or comes close):

 3.   List at least three pieces of support or evidence this writer gives for this point:
a.
b.
c.

4.  Which of these are STRONG, in your view?         Why?

5.  Which of these is WEAK or ineffective?       Why?

6. Are any of these hard to follow or not clear?

7.  Can you think of any OTHER examples/people/experiences/sources that would support this point?  List:

8.  Can you think of any other examples/people/experiences that would disprove this point?

Grammar Exercises in your daybook:

Before Friday, if you have CS or RO marked in your last two papers, do Ex. 37.1 page 390 in Everyday Writer. Each sentence must be fixed TWO ways, but you may use [...] to limit what you copy down in the daybook.

If you do NOT have a problem with CS or RO, do Ex. 39.1 page 401 and Ex. 39.3 page 405 in Everyday Writer. Read the explanations before the exercises, as needed.

Project with Feedback #3: Next Summary/Eval/Response

You hand in your Agger papers, if you haven't already. There should be a Works Cited page with it.

I return your Kickstarters on paper. Answer these questions:

1. You tell me one strength and one weakness of your paper (this can be your opinion or mine).

2. What did you find the most difficult about writing this paper?

3. Please tally up your proofreading/grammar errors again.

4. This assignment was supposed to give you practice with:
  • A. Creative thinking/writing.
  • B. Assessing the effectiveness of others' writing.
  • C. Effectively communicating in a new genre.
Please comment on each of the above. Did you, in fact, get practice in that area, and did you gain any insights on your own abilities in these areas? You may repeat yourself.

Now, a thinkwrite: Reading with an "open mind." I explain what that means to me....what does it mean to you?

We review what Project #3 with Feedback entails. Draft #1 is due this Wednesday.

Homework:

1. Continue taking notes about your chosen reading in Bedford. Begin drafting your summary/evaluation/response.

2. TWFTD:  critical thinking (the phrase).
