Work Day

Today you have time to get started thinking about your own Kickstarter on paper.

Classes at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm will not meet because I have a departmental meeting. If you  have any questions, email me at kloden@southeast.edu.

Homewok:

1. Have your Kickstarter Review ready to hand in on Monday. Be sure the formatting is correct. That's font size 12, Times New Roman, double-spaced lines, heading and page numbers.

2. Read the purple assignment sheet thoroughly. Work on a page of brainstorming notes in your daybook for your own Kickstarter on paper.

3. TWFTD: your choice from one of the Kickstarters you reviewed. Pick a word that you think is unusual, or you're not sure what it means.

4. One typo.

Solo Project #1 Due -- The Kickstarter Review

Print your Kickstarter Review paper due today.

Let's look at an example review. Answer these questions about the review in your daybook:

1. Give the number of the paragraph that is introducing the topic.

2. Copy down one sentence that you think explains what the point of the whole paper is. (thesis)

3. Explain in your own words what paragraph #3 is about.

4. Explain the topic of paragraph #4.

5. Explain the topic of paragraph #5.

6. Copy down the topic sentence of paragraph #6.

7. What is the topic of paragraph #7?

8. The last sentence of the paper is a fragment. Is it effective, or confusing? What do you think?  I could have used the title as my clincher instead: "What are we doing in Comp I at Milford? We're building to write and writing to build. " Which do you prefer?

9. When you finish the whole paper, is there anything missing? Do you have any unanswered questions?

After you finish these questions, you need to write on the board....

What are the Key Elements that successful Kicktsarters seem to have? I'm referring to sections.

We discuss this and come up with a list.  I hand out the assignment for Project with Feedback #2, you writing up your own Kickstarter on paper.  We add the Key Elements to it.

Homework:

1. Begin work on your own Kickstarter on paper. Your purpose is to create a document that would persuade your classmates to spend money. Draft #1 is due Tuesday.

2. Something else is due Monday, TBA.

3. TWFTD: the most pompous word you can find. Your choice.

4. One typo that I know of.

Easy Bib for Solo Project #1

Thinkwrite:  What are some ways you have seen or heard people credit a source?

I'll show you mine.

For this class we are using MLA style rules to give your readers information about where you got something. EasyBib is one tool that can help you do this. We will try it out today, and you will create a Works Cited page for this paper (and any other paper that uses sources other than your own head).

Let's look at Steps 4, 5 and 6. Oh look -- typo!!! That's Steps 4, 4, 5 and 6. What's your purpose for this paper? Use two Kickstarters to figure out what is EFFECTIVE in this genre of writing.

Homework:

1. Finish the paper due tomorrow. Add to it a Works Cited page that cites the two Kickstarters you are discussing.

2. No typo today.

3. TWFTD: citation

Solo #1: Kickstarter Review

I return the daybooks. Please note: if you want to make up the typo points, you may hunt for them and record them on the daybook score sheet. Turn the sheet back in to me tomorrow and you'll get the points.

To start us thinking, here's an article I happened upon over the weekend:

http://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2013/12/05/tip-of-the-iceberg-how-the-illusion-of-products-can-mislead-customers-about-the-realities-of-business/

This caused me to follow the link about the T-shirt. Which brought me back to Kickstarter.

Is there a product that you are very familiar with the hidden work that goes into producing it? Please explain....in a thinkwrite.

Did you find a Kickstarter that communicated clearly what would be required to produce it's product?

Now you need to turn in the homework in Moodle. Follow the directions in the "Forum" where you will upload your electronic document. If you printed the assignment, then you need to hand in the printed version, but you also need to go to Moodle and create a post in the forum.

When we are done with that, I'll hand out the assignment sheet for the Solo paper due Thursday. We need to discuss criteria...

Homework:

1. Finalize your choice of two Kickstarters to write about, and begin the steps of creating Solo Assignment #1. Start with taking a page of notes in your daybook. This leads to choosing criteria. Or this page of writing could be a pre-write for your paper.

2. One typo today that is not visible to spellcheck. It's a tough one, and that's a hint.

3. TWFTD: criteria
