Writing About a Problem

I pass out the assignment sheet.

Now you look at an example. We look at page190-191 in Bedford.

How well does this essay meet my assignment? You score the essay.

In your daybook, copy down these categories with a number for each. EXPLAIN the number you have given:

Beginning-
Problem-
Solution-
Conclusion-

We discuss.

Now you will answer the following questions in your daybook, due Monday.

1. What is the general topic you would like to write about?

2. Write out a statement of the specific problem you would like to see solved.

3. List as many causes of this specific problem as you can think of, including guesses. You may write down questions here, as well, if you're not sure of connections.

4. List any solutions that come to mind that would have an impact on these causes (and the problem).

When you finish this, start looking for information to help you with both parts of this. Keep track of any sources you use.

Begin writing Draft #1 due Tuesday.

Here's a definition of plagiarism. Here is intellectual property.

2. Why so different? Is there a problem here? Solution?

Herr Guttenberg

3. Was this the "right" outcome? Problem? Solution?

Beyond "plagiarism" to "intellectual property":

Book covers?

4. Was this a case of theft? Who decides? Problems?

If the courts are in charge...

5. Do you see a problem here?

If there's time....better news, for some: music... TV iTunes

6. Whom do you think the law says that TV news footage "belongs" to? What do you think? Have you heard of "fair use"?  Is there a problem?

All the questions above are answered in the daybook.

Homework:

1. Here are some more problems. Any of these something you'd like to explore in a paper?

Final Improvements

Open your Summary/ Eval/ Response paper in Turnitin (in Moodle). NOW you can click on the middle button and see comments I have made, and see some proofreading by the software.

You must open another copy of your paper to make changes based on what you see in TurnItIn.

Use EasyBib to create a Works Cited page.

For your daybook today, find one sentence using coordination and one using subordination from your own paper, and copy them down.

Check your daybook the list of errors for a paper returned to you. What should you look for in THIS paper?

Homework:

1. The final version of your Summary/ Evaluation / Response paper is due tomorrow WITH ALL TAN SHEETS. Bring all drafts as well.

2. TWFTD:  problem in OED (read DOWN).

Draft #2 of Summary/ Evaluation/ Response

Your Solo #2 is returned.

Questions:

1. After looking at your scores and the comments, what is one strength of this paper?

2. What is a major weakness?

3. What is one thing you need to do better as you write your next summary/response?

We look at an example.

You upload your Draft #2 into TurnItIn in Moodle.

You will get into the same groups and read/comment on Draft 2 of your Summary/Eval/Response papers.

Homework:

1. Look at the comments on your paper and work on the final version of this paper, due Wednesday. We will use TurnItIn during class tomorrow, so there will be time for questions/issues.
