The CRAAP Test

What is it about the internet?  Sources and reliability. Google: famous failures. See this? Compare to this.

Let's think about the C.R.A.A.P. test for this site.  Currency? Relevance? Authority? Accuracy? Purpose?

You are going to the lab and doing a Google search on one of your topics of interest for the next paper.

You must use three categories:

Excellent (good enough for college research -- primary, not secondary, if possible)

Okay (good enough for arguing with friends)

Bad (not for informing/questionable).

Look at as many Google pages as it takes to get TWO EXAMPLES OF EACH KIND.  Write an explanation next to each to justify your assessment, and tell what page of your search it was on.

For example:

"Search and rescue expense"

Excellent:

UT Admin Code R704-1. Search and Rescue Financial Assistance ...

www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r704/r704-001.htm  This is a source from the government;  if I can understand it , I should know who will pay for what in that state. page 1
]

Colorado Search and Rescue Fundwildlife.state.co.us/.../DOW/Shop/.../FrequentlyAskedQuestion.pdf
The government. page 1

Okay:

adventure.howstuffworks.com/pay-for-search-and-rescue1.htmCached - Similar

This is a general site that anybody can post to.  I'm not sure how the information is checked. I could use this as a starting point to lead to other sources. page 1

Paying for Wilderness Search and Rescue: Private Cost, or Public ... backpacker.com   This is a magazine that checks its facts -- I think.  page 1

The Cost of Search and Rescue  KKTV  This is a TV station.  I would need to check their sources out, since they like to sensationalize. page 1

Bad?

Beltrami County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue - Red Lake Net ...www.rlnn.com/...search-and-rescue/011020120013752821826.htmlCached   I can't tell what this address is -- I need to look at the site carefully.  Turns out, upon reading this, it's the sheriff himself writing.  A GOOD source! from page 2

Homework:

1.  Finish today's assignment, and begin work on Draft #1 Informing Essay.  It is due Wednesday.

2.  TWFTD:  criteria in OED
